new skills training sign Concord CAChoosing to begin a new profession and enroll in a trade school near Concord CA are serious decisions that will profoundly influence your future career. However with so many vocational schools to select from, exactly how do you go about locating the best one? Not only do you have to ascertain that you will obtain the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many students make the mistake of choosing a trade school simply because the campus is closest to their home or where the work. Or they might be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when analyzing trade school options, but they must not be the only ones. Other considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review some of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s look at some of the trade options that are available including the accessibility of online programs.

Online Trade Schools

Concord CA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Concord CA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Concord CA trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Concord CA area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Concord CA area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Concord CA is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Concord CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Concord CA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Concord CA contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in California and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Concord CA, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

Other things to look for are lots of hands-on training and state-of-the-art facilities. You should go to each of the schools in person that you are most interested in to explore the campus and speak with both the current students and faculty. Attempt to get a feel for the quality of the teaching and the interaction between them. Also, ask about scheduling choices and whether evening or weekend classes are offered if needed.
