Not only do you need to ascertain that you will obtain the comprehensive training needed to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Others might be attracted to the school that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are critical factors when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Added variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover several of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are available including the accessibility of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Cobb CA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Cobb CA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Cobb CA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Cobb CA area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Cobb CA area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Cobb CA is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Cobb CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Cobb CA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Cobb CA company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in California and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Cobb CA, check that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
