Online Vocational Schools

Ola AR student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Ola AR students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Ola AR trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Ola AR area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Ola AR area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Ola AR is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Ola AR area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Ola AR area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Ola AR contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Arkansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Ola AR, check that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
