Naturally the cost and location of the programs are important considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Other factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. We will cover some of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s look at some of the trade options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Concord AR student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Concord AR students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Concord AR trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Concord AR area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Concord AR area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Concord AR is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Concord AR area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Concord AR area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Concord AR contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Arkansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Concord AR, check that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
