But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you approach identifying the best one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will obtain the extensive training necessary to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of students make the error of enrolling in a trade school simply because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Additional variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will address some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Online Trade Schools

Tanacross AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Tanacross AK students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online education, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Tanacross AK trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Tanacross AK area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Tanacross AK area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Tanacross AK is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Tanacross AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Tanacross AK area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Tanacross AK company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Tanacross AK, check that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
