Learning a Trade Online

Nunapitchuk AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Nunapitchuk AK students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Nunapitchuk AK trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Nunapitchuk AK area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Nunapitchuk AK area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Nunapitchuk AK is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Nunapitchuk AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Nunapitchuk AK area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Nunapitchuk AK contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Nunapitchuk AK, check that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
