However with numerous trade schools to choose from, just how do you go about identifying the best one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will receive the complete training needed to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some students make the error of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are critical factors when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Additional variables such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will address several of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Nome AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Nome AK students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online classes, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Nome AK trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Nome AK area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Nome AK area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Nome AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Nome AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Nome AK area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Nome AK company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Nome AK, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

    Nome, Alaska

Nome (/ˈnoʊm/; Inupiaq: Siqnazuaq IPA: [siqnɐzuɑq]) is a city in the Nome Census Area in the Unorganized Borough of Alaska, United States. The city is located on the southern Seward Peninsula coast on Norton Sound of the Bering Sea. In 2018 the population was estimated at 3,866, a rise from the 3,598 recorded in the 2010 Census, up from 3,505 in 2000. Nome was incorporated on April 9, 1901, and was once the most-populous city in Alaska. Nome lies within the region of the Bering Straits Native Corporation, which is headquartered in Nome.

In the winter of 1925, a diphtheria epidemic raged among Alaska Natives in the Nome area. Fierce territory-wide blizzard conditions prevented the delivery of a life-saving serum by aeroplane from Anchorage. A relay of dog sled teams was organized to deliver the serum.

The origin of the city's name "Nome" is debated; there are three theories. The first is that the name was given by Nome's founder, Jafet Lindeberg, an immigrant from Norway.[citation needed] Nome appears as a toponym in several places in Norway.
