Learning a Vocation Online

Lower Kalskag AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Lower Kalskag AK students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online training, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Lower Kalskag AK trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Lower Kalskag AK area and throughout the USA to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Lower Kalskag AK area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Lower Kalskag AK is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Lower Kalskag AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Lower Kalskag AK area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Lower Kalskag AK contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Lower Kalskag AK, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
