Not only do you have to ascertain that you will get the complete training necessary to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the mistake of choosing a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others may gravitate to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are important considerations when analyzing vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Other variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Kasilof AK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Kasilof AK students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Kasilof AK trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Kasilof AK area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Kasilof AK area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Kasilof AK is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Kasilof AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Kasilof AK area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Kasilof AK contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Kasilof AK, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
