Online Vocational Schools

Kake AK student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Kake AK students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Kake AK trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Kake AK area and all over the USA to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Kake AK area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Kake AK is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Kake AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Kake AK area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Kake AK contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Kake AK, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
