But with numerous trade schools to choose from, just how do you approach locating the best one? Not only do you have to ascertain that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they may gravitate to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when analyzing trade school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Other variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will address some of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Hope AK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Hope AK students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online education, such as studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Hope AK trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Hope AK area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Hope AK area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Hope AK is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Hope AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Hope AK area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Hope AK company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Hope AK, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Point Hope, Alaska

The descriptive Inuit name of the place, "Tikarakh" or "Tikiġaq", commonly spelled "Tiagara", means "forefinger". It was recorded as "Tiekagagmiut" in 1861 by P. Tikhmeniev Wich of the Russian Hydrographic Department and on Russian Chart 1495[citation needed] it became "Tiekaga". This ancient village site was advantageous, because the protrusion of Point Hope into the sea brought the whales close to the shore. At Tikigaq, they built semi-subterranean houses using mainly whalebone and driftwood. Point Hope is one of the oldest continually occupied sites in North America. While some of the earlier dwellings have been lost to erosion as the point shrinks, it still provides a welter of valuable information to archaeologists on how early Eskimos survived in their harsh environment. The Tikigaq site is "by far the most extensive and complete one-period site yet discovered and described in the entire circumpolar region." - Helge Larsen.[5]

The first recorded Europeans to sight this cape were Russian explorers Mikhail Vasiliev and Gleb Shishmaryov of the Imperial Russian Navy on the ships Otkrietie and Blagonamierennie. Vasiliev and Shishmaryov named this landhead Mys Golovnina, after Vice Admiral Vasily Golovnin (1776–1831).

The cape at Point Hope was renamed by Captain Frederick William Beechey of the Royal Navy, who wrote on August 2, 1826: "I named it Point Hope in compliment to Sir William Johnstone Hope". According to Archdeacon Stuck[6] Hope was from a "well-known house long connected with the sea".[7]
