However with numerous vocational schools to pick from, exactly how do you approach identifying the right one? Not only do you have to ascertain that you will obtain the comprehensive training required to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Others may be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Additional variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will address several of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Learning a Trade Online

Holy Cross AK student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Holy Cross AK students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Holy Cross AK trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Holy Cross AK area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Holy Cross AK area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Holy Cross AK is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Holy Cross AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Holy Cross AK area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Holy Cross AK contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Holy Cross AK, verify that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
