Online Vocational Schools

Northport AL student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Northport AL students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online classes, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Northport AL trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Northport AL area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Northport AL area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Northport AL is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Northport AL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Northport AL area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Northport AL contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Alabama and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Northport AL, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
